Americas Got Talent?
As most of you have heard of the TV show "Americas Got Talent" that lets ordinary people display there talents. But if you haven't watched the last season of it, you should know that Gabrielle Union was one of the Judges on this show. Recently she has been fired for reportedly, two reasons. One of the reasons was that Union had filed a complaint that there was racist joke being used within the Human Resources and it was not take seriously. Another reason was that producers complained that her hairstyles were "too black". In this day in age we should all know that jokes whether they were meant to be harmful or not that was used in a racist manner should be taken seriously. Also, many black women had to fight to wear their hair how they want too regardless of their race. This is a discrimination issue that needs to be addressed.
I agree there is no place for discrimination based on looks. It saddens many that this is an issue in our country after all that has been done to bring discrimination to an end.
ReplyDeleteI understand the idea that people like to make jokes about things but theres a certain line where something don't need to be said and Gabrielle crossed that line.
ReplyDeleteHair should not be a problem. But even women wearing braids, weaves, or extensions they are judged. We should be open and know about other cultures hairstyles. Even with my experience being a hispanic and wearing box braids, I was told on my first week of Ball State talking to a church group leader. I asked " So what type of religious group are you? and what is your group all about? " The woman replied "Well you dont look like the type". I was wearing a ball state shirt and leggings with my box braids down. I wore nothing to do with religion or politics. I proceeded to ask questions and just replied "do you still want your free slushie". And yes of course I took that slushie. Lastly she would never answered any of my questions but instead ruled that I did not look like her or her "type" of church goer.
ReplyDeleteIt bothers me that people are like this because no one should judge others by what they wear, or how they do their hair. It took years for discrimination to be abolished and yet people are becoming very judgmental as the years go by.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the world is getting too soft! I do think making racial jokes on live television is a little much, but society as a whole is just too soft and needs to lighten up.
ReplyDeleteWomen in general face enough judgment and expectation of their looks, regardless of their hair. If a woman feels that she is being discriminated against she has every right to report it. Comments should never be made in attempt to slander a person, or make them feel insecure. Individualism is no longer supported in media. There is consistently a stigma and reluctance to be an individual in today's society. The conformity of society raises so many moral questions, too many to discuss in this comment. So with that being said, people should have the freedom of expression that was promised in the very constitution of this country.
