Columbus
Christopher Columbus was once thought to be a hero who discovered the Americas by mistake when in fact he only discovered the Carribean and committed horrific acts against humanity but his crimes were overlooked because he found gold and other valuables so he was hailed as a hero. This isn't the only instance of people committing cruel acts with WW2 being the best example because war crimes were committed on all sides even the Allies. Crimes committed by the Soviets and the Allies were overlooked because they defeated the Axis powers and restored peace. So what we can see is that when one side is benefitting or profiting off of cruel acts or crimes they tend to overlook them and have some justification for their acts despite the cruelty of their actions.
You are completely correct with your evaluation of Christopher Columbus. I also loved your example of using WW2 to relate it too. The education systems are treating the young American kids wrong about the whole situation of Christopher Columbus. All that they tell the kids is that he found America and gold. The system leaves out all the bad things he did. He individually led a genocide against Indian tribes. Something needs to change in the system if we want to teach the kids the right thing to do so history does not repeat itself.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with your evaluation of Christopher Columbus ever since I was little I was told he was a good guy all my life until we discussed this in class and it blew my mind. Knowing this now i'm glad that Christopher Columbus day will be named differently.
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting that people in the United States celebrate Columbus and are fighting so hard to keep the holiday since, like you said, Columbus never actually set foot on American soil. Its a little bit scary to think about the fact that as children we were taught Columbus did these amazing things and they were all a lie. It makes you think that what else about our history has been told to us as a lie?
ReplyDeleteI agree and like commenters said before its pretty ironic we give him all the credit. When native Americans lived their first.
