Rhetoric Discussion In Class

The question, "What is Rhetoric?", has been asked many times in the classroom. This topic has been controversial because of the many definitions that come with the word "rhetoric". People often say that this is based on the art of persuasion and they are correct, but there is so much more that contributes to a good definition. When sitting in the middle of the discussion, I kept questioning whether my statement was correct. There are so many ideas that could be thought of and rhetoric can even be a manipulative power that can be used towards convincing individuals their arguments are wrong. Using this in society is how humans function in daily life. With these thoughts in my mind, I began to wonder what life would be like without rhetoric.

  1. I agree that rhetoric can be used as a manipulative power. I think that especially today politicians use rhetoric in a negative way to persuade people who aren't as educated in a subject. The people who only want to see the best in who they have elected most of the time blindly believe the nonsense some politicians spew. But, as long as the person can use rhetoric, they can show how their opponent is wrong without showing how they are right.

  2. I agree that the topic of "What is Rhetoric?", is very controversial. I too questioned my definition of what I wrote. Like you said, I did write that rhetoric is the art of persuasion. There is no one clear definition what rhetoric which is why I believe makes it so powerful. It is used every day by every single human being but for different reasons. I believe that if rhetoric was never a thing or existed the world in which we live would be far different then how it is today.
