It's for the Mortgage
In the movie "Thank You For Smoking" the main character Nick claims he does what he does "To pay the mortgage". Obviously what he does questions his morals, and it is a controversial job any way you look at it. Personally I can't quite see eye to eye with him on what he does and nobody should try and influence teenagers to pick up smoking. Of course he had a choice, he could have taken a job elsewhere doing something else. However, Nick is good at what he does, and it seems he is heavily invested in what he does. What Nick does is very questionable without a doubt, but he's simply doing it to pay the mortgage.
I personally think "Thank You For Smoking" was an extraordinary movie becasue it puts the viewers through the eyes of not a civilian but a lobbylist like Nick Naylor. He simply completes his job in order to "pay the mortgage" and then goes to influence teens to smoke. I agree Nick is good at his job, but I can't quite understand a person who is willing to kill other human beings just for the sake of money.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie I feel that Nick enjoys what he does when he persuades others and manipulates them because he gets a sense of power and influence over others but he uses the excuse of paying the mortgage to justify his actions.
ReplyDeleteI think that "Thank you for smoking" was a great movie becasue it shows the perspective of the smoking companies and their lobbyists. I agree with him when he says that 90% of what poeople do good or bad is to pay the morgage. But I can't comprehend the thought of killing 1,200 people a day for their morgage.
